Written by Joseph Mazo who got permission from Balanchine to shadow the New York City Ballet for an entire season. During the spring of 1973, Mazo attended every morning class, stage rehearsal and performance. Interviewing and integrating with the company, Mazo was able to write an intimate book about the company dynamics at the time.
