The superb artistry of Vaslav Nijinsky first dazzled the Western world in 1909 , when impresario Serge Diaghilev introduced the Russian ballet to a wildly enthusiastic Paris audience. Nijinsky raised the art of dance to a new level and gave significant direction tot he development of ballet in this century, but his meteoric career spanned less than ten years, and his last public performance was in 1917. Truly a tragic genius he was born to greatness, tortured by love and finally destroyed by insanity.
